The past few years have been those a struggle for the New York Mets.
From their historic collapse in 2007. To having deal away some of their big stars. The Mets have gone through a lot on and off the field. From the players, to the owners.
But in 2012 the Mets luck had suddenly but shortly turned around. The offense was hitting, ranking near the top of the national league. R.A. Dickey was in the midst of his Cy Young season. Johan Santana threw the 1st no-hitter in Mets history. At the all-star break the Mets were 8 games over .500 at 48-40.
Then reality set back in. The offense stopped hitting, Johan sruggled badly in the 2nd half, and the Mets fell all the way down to 51-54 on August 1st.
They ended up finishing 74-88 overall, 4th in the NL East. Then in mid December the Mets traded Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey to the BlueJays for top prospect Travis d'arnaud and others.
How do the Mets stand now? Well, not much different.
A few fresh faces did join the Mets this offseason in Shaun Marcum, Marlon Byrd, and Colin Cowgill. Along with a few other decent players. Yet they still don't stand as much better.
Early on in camp New York has some big questions that need to be answered in who's ganna play center field and lead off? Will Johan Santana even be ready for Opening day? The Mets haven't been pleased with Santana saying he didn't come to camp in "pitching shape". Could that be a problem?
On the bright side Mets fans, back in December David Wright signed a huge 8-year, $138M contract extension to lock him in New York until at least 2020. So there's that to be happy about.
I know losing sucks, but if you've been a Mets fan long enough you should know that greatness hasn't been expected much latley. But hey, when you play in New York, the expectation is always to win.
