Sunday in Tampa, all it took was a 2-2 fastball from Toronto's J.A. Happ to have Yankees fans panicing. When Curtis Granderson stepped into the box for his 1st at-bat of Spring Training all was normal.
It was that 2-2 fastball that ran up and in on the lefty Granderson, fracturing his right forearm. Putting the Yankees slugger out for at least 10 weeks until early May. Leaving the question, who replaces Granderson?
Well for starters, the Yankees are in a similar situation from last year when Brett Gardner missed a huge chunk of the season with elbow problems. New York relied on Raul Ibaniez and Andrew Jones to platoon in left-field. Both of those players are gone, replaced by 2 more outfield veterans Matt Diaz and Juan Rivera. The most likely options.
As far as younger players fit into the equation with Zoilo Almote, he impressed in his 1st game on Saturday. Melky Mesa is another player that could get a chance at earning a spot, but its unlikely. You could also look at a couple other guys like Adonis Garcia and Ronnier Museller. But any other prospects are mostly out of the question.
GM Brian Cashman has already said that Eduardo Nunez will not be playing the outfield this season, but serve at a backup to Derek Jeter. It's also possible we see the Yankees make a trade for someone, no, not Stanton. But a guy more like a Vernon Wells or Alfonso Soriano who both have no-trade clauses but could waive them for the Yankees.
Were're only 2 games into Spring Training so at this point anything could happen and anyone could win the starting job in LF. All of this is only speculation, because with the Yankees you never know what might happen.
