Baseball blogger and Palm Coast sports writer Gavin Ewbank has officially announced his retirement from the game of baseball. He'll be riding off into the sunset with his iPhone in one hand, and MacBook in the other. Gavin will also be going into retirement with his cat, Spunky, at his side.
Ewbank is leaving the game after spending eight years as primarily a catcher, pitcher and middle infielder. He also spent some time in the outfield, but didn't technically play well enough at those positions to consider himself an outfielder.
"This is something that I have been think about for a long time, and really what it's boiled down to is that I pretty much suck at playing baseball." Ewbank said. "Everyone thinks they know how to play the game because they can mash homeruns off their little brother in backyard baseball, but that's not the case with me -- I sick, and I know it."
Gavin was a three-time all-star in the Palm Coast Little League. He retires with a career 4.58 ERA on the mound, with one career no-hitter that he tossed in the spring of 2013 against Gateway High School -- although they can be considered a little league team. At the plate, he was a .289 lifetime hitter, with three career homeruns -- all inside the park -- and 215 RBIs.
"It's a shame that Gavin has decided to call it quits at such a young age, he was such a great player." said no one ever. Nobody ever went on to say, "he was one of the most athletic and most gifted athletes I've ever seen. He was one step ahead of everyone on the field."
Gavin never made it farther than the Junior Varsity level in high school -- mainly because he just wasn't good enough to play for the Varsity team.
"The baseball world got a lot better today," Gavin added, " mainly because I'm no longer weighing it down."
