One thing's for sure, this couldn't come soon enough. The Mets biggest problem in 2013 has been easily their starting pitching. Their 4.37 ERA ranks 11th in the National League.Coming into Friday night's game, the Mets were 0-8 in games started by Jeremy Hefner and 0-9 in the games following a Matt Harvey start.
Of the six pitchers to start a game for the Mets this season, only Harvey (1.93) has an ERA under 4.70 (Hefner). Dillon Gee has given up 30 runs in 44.1 innings, and Shaun Marcum is winless in his first 5 starts in a Mets uniform.
It was obvious that the plan for this year was to build for the future. But when your pitchers are posting number of that magnitude, it gives reason for changes to be made. Zack Wheeler is the change that Mets fans have been clamoring for since day one.
As a fan of baseball and a fan of great pitching, I really can't wait to see the 9th overall pick in 2009 begin his career with the Mets and hopefully begin a great 1-2 punch with him and Harvey.
"He's ready" said a club source to the Daily News. I sure hope so. And I know Mets fans are now counting down the days until the arrival of Wheeler.
