Today the Redsox had announced they have agreed to sign free-agent pitcher Ryan Dempster to a 2-yr, $26.5M Deal. Which raises the question, are the Redsox ready to contend in 2013?
My opinion yes, they will contend. Division champs, no. I just dont think the moves they have made so far this winter are good enough to take on the current AL East favorites, Toronto Blue Jays. I'm not saying they are making the wrong moves, but they're not the best moves.
I will give the Redsox credit for filling the holes on their roster they had at 1B, OF, but only Dempster for pitching. So far they got the big bats they wanted in Victorino and Napoli.
But look closely at it, Napoli is most likley going to be playing primarily at 1B and even though he is very productive, he's not as big as an impact as Adrian Gonzalez was for Boston. And Victorino? Look at him, he's 32 and his offensive numbers have been dropping over the past few seasons, not saying he wont have a big year in Boston, just saying not to get too excited.
As for pitching, their bullpen started off awful in 2012 but got better as the season went on. The Redsox biggest problem as a team has been its starting pitching. Lester struggled, Becketts gone, Doubront and Bucholts were really the only strong points of all the Redsox starters. Also John Lackey will return to the Redsox in 2013 coming off Tommy John Surgery, but fans could only pray that Lackey's return doesnt go anything like his past couple seasons for the Redsox. So the numbers vs American League teams might not look so good but he's still the best the Redsox have at the point.
Tough to judge now but I will predict the Redsox will finally return to postseason play next season as a Wild Card team. But as a Redsox fans, thats all you can ask for.
